Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday appointed a military commander to lead the defense of Kyiv, as columns of Russian-led armored troops entered the capital.

“Defending our capital is now our most important priority,” Zelenskyy said in a statement video address posted on his Telegram channel.

The defense of Kyiv will be led by General Mykola Zhernov, in coordination with the city’s elected mayor, said former heavyweight boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko, Zelenskyy said.

“I decided to appoint a professional soldier to be the head of the Kyiv city military service for the duration of the war.” Zelenskyy said. “To ensure the defense of the city, to stop the enemy plots in our capital, so that the people of Kyiv have all they need.”

Zelenskyy denounces what he says is attack cruise missile at the regional administrative headquarters in the northeastern city of Kharkiv as “an undisguised act of terror.”

“Russia is a terrorist country. No one will forgive. No one will ever forget it,” said the unshaven president and wore a khaki t-shirt that became a hallmark of his wartime leadership.

Russian attacks on military and civilian command centers, along with the bombardment of residential areas in northeastern cities such as Kharkiv and Okhtyrka, bode ill for Ukraine’s political leadership. as they prepare for one last campaign to defend the capital.

Satellite images show mile-long Russian armored columns stretching along highways northwest of Kyiv. These forces joined the battle on Tuesday as Belarusian troops crossed the border at Chernihiv to the northeast. This means that forces loyal to Russian President Vladimir Putin are now moving towards the capital on either side of the Dnipro River.
