Zelenskyy on Mariupol: “Every day it becomes more unstable”

Zelenskyi says it is almost impossible to estimate the loss of life or destruction suffered from the attack on Mariupol and he lacks confidence in his Russian colleagues.

“I don’t trust the Russian military and the Russian leadership,” he said.

Zelenskyy alternated at times between his native language and English, and again raised the possibility of Russia deploying its nuclear arsenal.

“You could do it,” he said. “To them, human life is nothing.”

He continued to express a desire for the invasion to end, with no concrete indication of when and under what circumstances.

“There are millions of people who want to live,” said Zelenskyy. “We all want to fight. But we all have to do our best to prevent this war from becoming endless. The longer it takes, the more we would lose.”

He expressed optimism that President Joe Biden will visit Ukraine in the near future after the White House signaled this week that it is considering sending a senior official to meet the Ukrainian leader. However, the contours of these considerations are still unclear.

“It’s his decision, of course,” Zelenskyy said of Biden, nodding to the security risks involved. “But I think he’s the leader of the United States, and that’s why he should come here to see.”
